Yes I belive you would have been beter off with the 8' model. the differance between the 8 and 10 is only if your sealing height is over 8 do you need the 10. I have put in a new 8 my self and I dont need to hold on to go up or down. My opinen is the 10 needs a steaper angle so the steps dont take up as much room when down, & there isnt as much stress on the hings points with the longer run of the 10 if the angle was not so steep.

You might try (a lot of work) moving the metal spring arms down the lader a little but this also means you will need to add some wood back to the end of the steps (a lot of work also) I think I'd just hold on, and get some help when getting things up and down.
The guys at the home centers dont always know what they a talking about!
