Attic Conversion

Posted by Christa on December 26th, 1997 09:34 AM

My husband and I own a 30'x30' one story 2BR 1BA home
with a walk-up attic(built in the mid 30's.)Our young
family is growing and we would like to convert the
attic into at least two bedrooms by installing a shed
dormer out the back and perhaps two dormers in the
front. We'd like to do as much of the work ourselves
as possible. Our plan is to live in the house for the
next 8-10 years and then use it as a rental. We would
need to install a new staircase, since the existing one
is currently located on the back porch and is too
narrow for daily use. THE MAIN PROBLEM is that
during a previous addition, the new roof was braced off
of the old roof. Is there a way to salvage the existing
roof or will it have to be removed entirely? (We are
actually not entirely opposed to this because we would
like to raise the pitch of the roof to convert it to a
Cape Cod style.)If it must be removed what would be an
estimate of the cost to replace the roof on a 30'x30'
house? Who can we contact to help us find out this info?
Can a builder determine this or must we hire an

What other things should we keep in mind for
a project like this? Any *** **** shows on the subject?
What a great show this would make!--in a clean,
close-knit, picturesque little town in Ohio.
Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated!!!!
