Attaching shelf brackets to metal-studded wall?

Posted by Randy Gordon-Gilmore on January 24th, 1999 09:34 PM

My wife and I have just bought our first house, which is metal-framed. How can I attach shelf brackets (the L-shaped kind for cantilevered shelves) to the wall, especially to carry moderate weight (20+ lbs/bracket)?
I know that, for wooden studs, lag bolts could be used, but it doesn't seem like the self-drilling metal stud screws would take the pull-out force.
Is there a kind of spreading anchor that could be installed through the stud itself? Thanks for any guidance!
