Grows on rotting wood such as wood chips. Penn State University has a color bulletin that is free to order. They say to use cedar, redwood, or cyprus mulch. They say these are not succeptable to rotting. Must not use fake redwood (wood dyed red).

This stuff did some real damage to my porch. Its going to be difficult to get rid of, the spores can reinfest the beds for up to 10 years...
