Are there problems with the metal patch?

I realize the ways you're recommending are the cheapest ways to fix drywall. In my case, the hole is about 4" x 4", and the drywall around the current patch is damaged so the hole will have to go bigger (about 5" x 5". Once I pull the old patch out, the blown in insulation in my attic will fall out. If I can use the metal/fiberglass mesh patch and avoid having to deal with insulation, I'll gladly pay the $6 for the patch to avoid the insulation.

My question concerns whether the patch will stick on unpainted paper, or should I primer the area first.
