yes you can remove the wire, put cover back on box when your done. also make sure you cover the hole left when you remove wire
you can add plug(recepitle??) if them 2 wires are live or put wire caps on the leads and put a cover that is one blank and other side open for switch....in other words they sell covers that are blanks or half blanks
and one last thing sparkey, remember to shut breaker!
