My wife and I just refinished a house in Maryland. The kitchen floor was covered in a 50ies/60ies style linoleum, but the condition of the floor warranted a new surface. under the linoleum was a layer of masonite (a dense cardboard substance) then a yellow pine floor. It was not the same width as the boards you are referring, we had a them refinished and stained a little darker so they would look like a gymnasium floor. we are happy with the finished product. they are not cold like a tile would be and they are forgiving on a fumbled item.
