Another Ice Dam question - 1 storey house

Posted by Dave on January 12th, 2001 11:14 AM

I'm in my second house that's 1 storeys - So there is a kneespace behind the walls, and the attic is very small.

Both of my houses were built over 60 years ago - neither of them have had any soffit venting. (The soffits are on the first floor - so any venting would result in airflow behind the walls of the second floor.)

My question is, Is there something different about a 1 storey house that there should be no soffit venting? ..Or did the builders in those days not know the value of venting? Or were houses just colder then - so less heat made it to the attic?

Is the soffit vent a modern technique? Should I cut some vents, or will that airflow suck all of the heat out of the second floor?
