--they should be changed once a year or it also mean it needs replacing period...because the radioactive material used in it for sensing change in air density i.e. smoke is out of useful life. How old is your unit? some of them have a limited life of 10 years but really can go for 15 or 20 years...>If its the kind that employs a radioactive material the loud chirps could be telling you that its time for a new one. good luck LJ
