... If after a while, the dowel falls through or comes out or just works itself loose. As with any wood, it expands and contracts too but at a much higher rate because it's not as solid as the surrounding floor.

Yea, I'd plug them and do what I could to get them to match. Then, hopefully, they're out of the way where I could cover them with a planter or a piece of furniture or something. My best to ya and hope this helps.
