You are clearly due for a roof change, and the presence or absence of asbestos should not deter you. Asbestos fiber in an asphalt matrix does not generally present a significant respirable fiber problem. To verify, take a sample to a laboratory (see yellow pages Laboratories Analytical). Request a polarized light microscophy (PLM) analysis. This analysis can tell you if asbestos is present, and what type and percent is there.
