If you ( or anyone else)are interested in wallcovering alternatives, check out fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) on the web. Here's one of hundreds of sites:
FRP wall paneling is incredibly durable. In the past it was hard to find and was only available in smooth or pebble grained white, but there have been great advances, and now the basic colors and textures can be found at most home improvement type stores, and special ordering offers an endless array of colors, patterns, and textures. I've installed it in dozens of situations, and consider it the product of choice for humid areas, tub surrounds, backsplashes, commercial kitchens, etc.
