Patrick, I wouldn't try to span that much with drywall, and I certainly would not advise screwing into the ductwork, or attaching to the ductwork in any fashion; you want to keep the duct isolated.

Consider losing another 3/4" by putting in 1X4 or 1X2 cross bracing, or use 3/4 plywood instead of drywall. It can be primed, skim-coated, and taped in just like the drywall.
