Think about using a dryer type thickset mortar like used in shower bases. You have a lot longer time to work it and it will be just as hard or harder when it sets up.

Also you might think about putting down some pipe for radiant heating and then have them come in an put down the 2" or so layer of cement over the pipe needed then you have killed 2 birds with one stone.
