Henry, Thanks for the posting. Some 10 years ago when I moved into the house I'm in now, I ripped down those ugly (not to mention toxic fumes in a fire)foam beams and put up some "real" wood beams made of rough sawn cedar 1x8s and 1x6s. I pretty much followed what you outlined at your site and had excellent results. I left the rough sawn cedar unfinished and today it has a nice honey color look to it. They were easy to build and light to put up.
