Agree with Tomh, use a scrap of drywall

cut it to fit the hole to be patched. sometimes I will just take like a flat paint stir stick or something similar and but a piece slightly wider than the hole. then take hot glue and glue it to the back of my drywall hole patch, let dry/cool down. insert a drywall screw into the center of my patch to use as a handle.... then will apply a dab of hot glue on the underside out edges of my back stick. then put in the hole patch into the ceiling and let the backer stick glue to the ceiling drywall. Now you have a patch stuck into place that you can then tape and float out the seams. good luck...LJ
