Aging Support Beam

I live in a 82 year old home. The support beam in my house is a large wood support. There is a large split in the center of this beam. What would you recommend? Do I need to have the beam replaced or can it be remedied with additional floor supports? I am trying to do the most cost effective method. I'm a single mom with a limited income.
