Sue, one trick that I use is to wipe a very light amount of Minwax Special Walnut (#224) on everything. You are not trying to stain with this technique as much as add a hint of color. Use a white cotton cloth to spread the stain. If you don't mind getting your hands yucky looking for a while, work without gloves but wash them with Fast Orange or similar. The thin latex gloves will not last and chemical resistant glove can be tough to do delicate work in. You might try dishwashing gloves.

As usual, try this in a small, hidden area first and to get the technique. Use nothing but the rags on the wall. Brushes will get too much stain on.
