You should use latex modified thin set mortar. By the standards you should have a 1 1/2 inches of wood flooring, so the tile is supported. If you don't have this your tile will crack or come up. Now we have a product that is concrete board called wonderboard or durarock, so it is not nessessary to have so much wood.
