adhesive on 90 yr old hardwood floors

Dear Bob,Bruce &Chris,
We went ahead a bought the "Victorian" in Hattiesburg, MS, that we wrote you about in Dec.97.
It turned out to be Colonial Revival and we love it! However not all of its owners have and recently I decided to remove the carpet in the master bedroom only to find that not only did it not have any padding but that it had been secured to the hardwood floors with an adhesive!!! What a mess. Can you suggest a way to remove the adhesive without damaging the wood. I have used a brush to test a small spot and the finish under the gook is in amazingly good shape!
I read your reply about refinishing hard wood floors (someone else's ?) but will I have trouble sanding through the adhesive?
