Thanks for your reply. Since the attic entry is in the bathroom, it's easy for me to look in there, once I get back into the house. It's about 16or 20 " below the level of the joists, actually. The tiles are about 1" square and a nasty gray fibrous material I remember from the basement of our house growing up (1960s). All in all a weird bathroom. i suppose they had their reasons. Actually, it's another room I want to remove the drop ceiling... the bathroom topic just came up when someone asked about "office style" celings and I wasn't sure what that was. Now that you mention those large sheets, I agree, that would be hideous in a bathroom in a 70 or 90 year old house. Ludicrous, actually. :)
