Dear Desperate,

You may want to get an AC Sensor. This device resembles a large pen, with a flat tab on the end; you can put the tab into one side of the outlet at a time, and when it senses the "hot" side it will light up. On a non-grounded receptacle, the hot side should be the more narrow slot.

It can also be used to tell when a wire is hot, simply by laying the tab on the side of the wire; it will read right through the insulation, so there's no need to find bare wire.
