An unvented fireplace will give you better performance as far as heat recovery, BUT an unvented fireplace will also generate a lot of moisture from combustion. In the winter, this will cause condensation, etc on your windows. You might want to consider a vented insert that will give some heat recovery. Otherwise, putting gas logs in a wood burning fireplace is nice for the look, but gives little heat into the house.
