Abestos Shingles

Posted by KC on July 12th, 2001 03:34 PM

I am soon to be a new home owner of a 70 year old home.
The house I believe may have abestos shingles under the
vinyl siding. I am led to believe this because in the semi
attached garage you can see on the inside of the garage where
it abutts the house you can see the existing abestos shingles.
During our home inspection the inspector did not seemed surprised
by this due to the age and said that we mainly did not have
anything to worry about unless we were going to remove them
as it would be costly. My father also stated the same thing. And
that they are a good insulator.
Now to the point of my question:
While reading other posts trying to get ideas on some
other things we have to do in the home. I have read some of the
previous posts on Abestos Shingles. And now I am completely
confused on what I should do about this? And if they are
underneath the vinyl siding would this be a major
problem? We are also planning to replace the front window
we currently have to a bay window - probably larger than what
is there now? Is this going to be a problem as well??

Any advice is welcomed. Thank you - KC
