A valley without metal....

Hi David
I'm not a professional roofer, but I can't imagine 'webbing' across a valley, although I see it done quite often. It takes a bit more time to install a metal valley and cut the shingles to fit up over the edge of the metal....which is probably why some roofers web.....

The only fix I can think of in your case is to remove the shingles in the valley back about 18" or so from the valley center, install the metal flashing and then reinstall shingles. A lot of work, and others might have different ideas. But I think it will be almost impossible to find your roof leak, and my guess is that over time, the leak will increase in size as the wood of the addition shrinks a little bit.
