A question for TomR

Thanks for answering my question! Now here's one for you. You mentioned mixing drywall compound with paint. Can you give me a little more information on that? Again, would this process require any special pretreatment of the walls? The walls are in the main living area of a 70's era passive solar house...and, have been painted. One concern is that the cinder block lines will show through a painted technique. Does the mixture you mentioned end up thick like plaster?
Finally, do you think this is a suitable project for a do it yourselfer? Thank you VERY much for any additional help you can give.
