We lived in an older home with very dark paneling. We did somethin really cool to give our main living area a very modern and appealing look. We painted the upperportion, left the lower portion the original paneling, and installed a chair rail - instant wainscotting - My husband was very skeptical of my idea, but once we finished he agreed that it was the best looking room in the house. Forget about filling the cracks, it just will not work. We used Kilz for our first coat and then a cream color for the final coat. The standard measurements are 3 feet of paneling and 5 feet of paint. My husband then cleaned and overstained the unpainted paneling. When we sold the house last year, the buyer absolutely loved that room. Good luck
