a ten year old unit should not need to be replaced unless the compressor has been damaged (unless it is BDP carrier brand) with an aluminum coil ...even then most likely it has a minor malfunction..(failed capacitor, faulty stat, failed contactor etc.. even a condensor fan failure is relatively for replacing the evaporator coil, needs replacing only if you desire the higher efficiency evaporator coil that matches you outdoor unit SEER rating.
