Steve....latex and oil paints both stick by surface adhesion? Roots?? Never heard of that in any of my paint classes?

100 %Acrylic latexes often stick well to oils - although if the oil is very shiny - they don't.

Also, oils are very forgiving of poor surface prep - they stick to most anything - including latex. That, and better flow and levelling, are the two main benefits oils still have over latex.

Having said all this.........your recommendations are good.

ICI makes a great S/T oil stain called Wood-Pride. Should be able to find it at any ICI Paints Store.
