Hi, Steve,
what every you do, you will still have the same "volume" of space you have to take out of the joist. if you take it out in one lump, then you are going to weaken the joist, I feel, you would be safer ??, if you drill small holes "near the top on the joists.and try to spread the holes
but remember where the cables are when you refix the floorboards also try to place the cable in the centre of a board, that way you can still fix the floorboard at the sides ( because the cable is in the middle )
