"refinishing" OLD cabinets with original shellac?

Posted by Jules on May 20th, 2001 10:59 PM

hopefully this'll be a quick and easy question for someone to answer!

we're moving into a lovely older (circa 1940) home with all the original woodwork including kitchen cabinets.

The woodwork is lovely and has a beautiful grain, but it has never been refinished (the original owners used a second kitchen until about 10 years ago!)and probably never even properly cleaned...

Consequently, the finish is dull and appears uneven.

A friend told me that it was possible to improve the finish simply by using denatured alcohol - is that true? How would I do this? How do I prep the cabinets before doing this to remove grime & oil?

Because it's a family home, the owners are quite paranoid about us doing anything to the place, so if I'm going to make these cabinets look good again, I can't do anything drastic, like totally refinish them!
