a word of caution on algeacides and birds...

I have an outdoor pond with fish and plants. Algaecides for aquariums work well, it "burns" the algea off. However, most of them state that plants and fish must be removed during treatment (up to a week). Even those products that state they are 'safe for plants and aquatic life' aren't always so; I know someone who lost an expensive water lily to burn from a 'safe' algeacide. So, assuming as Jay J. does that birds do visit your fountain, I would encourage you not to use an algeacide, as it can harm them. -Kathy
