4/4 is just fancy for 1"!

If they are referring to the size of the board then the 4/4 is said as "four-quarter" board. 4/4 would mean it is 4 times 1/4" thick or simply 1" thick. You may have heard of 5/4 (five-quarter) board? It is 1-1/4" thick and used for exterior wood decks.
