3-way switches

Thanks for the response, JT. My problem is a little more complex, I guess. When I do wire it as you suggested here's what happens: either switch will turn on only the main light. If you try to turn it off with the opposite switch both lights come on but only half as bright as they should be.

Perhaps something is wired wrong in the main light (the box where the power source comes in) but what baffles me is the system works perfectly when the second light is disconnected. If something was wrong in the main light it shouldn't work when only it is connected, don't you think?
