A lot of the gas furnaces were 80% efficient. With age, that efficency probably has dropped, but not to 50%. If the 2 stage furnace is one of the high efficiency (90 plus %), I would go for it. However if what they mean is a two stage blower for heating and cooling, and the furnace is still 80% efficient, I would forget it and get new quotes for 90+%. With the "new age" of gas prices, you can't be too efficient, and the payback will be quick.
