230 volt between red black

on the 230 volts between black and red not always if they coming from same phase of breaker box they will read zero volts across them and 115 to neutral or ground

red black used manu times for 3-way switches
seperate power to two fixtures or a split receptacle manu times these are on the same phase
or even used to and from a switch such as LJ thinks this was used i tend to agree with him you should look for hot wire still up in box

aways check black to white
black to green

and is good ideal ta purchase a voltage sensor from walmart
when place close to a hot wire it beeps letting you know which wires are hot

always turn power off before touching
110 can kill
