Malcolm, what would you need 220 volts for, other than a stove or water heater. Honestly, my first thought was gro-lights and the narcs and cops might think the same thing. Might be kind of difficult to tell them that you just wanted to run your tablesaw and planer in your one bedroom apartment, and even those motors can probably be set up for 110.

Particularly in an apartment setting, I would call a qualified electrician if you even can do it in your apartment building. The building owners might object and if you do it wrong and cause a fire, you could end up with a huge lawsuit. You have a lot of things to check before even thinking of calling the electrician.
