100 year old vic-farmhouse needs exterior paint

Posted by Max on July 5th, 2001 01:36 PM

We have completed 90% of the restoration of our 1900 victorian farm house in northern WV. My new problem is that we have at least 6 layers of paint on the exterior. The last owners slapped on a single coat of latex paint. The remaining layers under it are old high gloss exterior oil base enamel. I have heavy "aligator" cracks through out the old finish. I've tried scrapping. This seems impossible as the oil based stuff is still well adheared to the wood. I tried a pressure washer on a small section. This did well, but gave the wood a "felt" look. I need some advice folks. I have determined that the wood is Poplar. I'm confident that the gingerbread on the dormers are the same. If you need more specifics and think you can help me, I would be more than happy to send photos of our project. Thanks for any and all help.
