Winter Weather Safety Guidelines

As waves and waves of cold air descend on much of the U.S., it's important that homeowners take steps to safely heat their homes.

Incidents of home fires increase over the winter months, with everything from fireplaces to supplemental space heaters to blame.

Additionally, non-fire deaths caused by carbon monoxide go up in the winter as well, as fuel-burning features like furnaces and fireplaces are a source for the potentially lethal gas.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recently issued a safe heating guide that includes fire prevention tips as well as CO poisoning prevention steps. Some, like placing a space heater on a flat, level floor and not on a rug or carpet, are seemingly common sense. But a tip like asking the salesperson if a space heater is safety-certified might not be one that many people know.

Read up on the safety guidelines to keep your home warm and safe.
