Downsizing in a big way Downsizing in a big way

Live Small

It isn't often that you find an American home that is smaller than a pickup truck. Actually, Jay Shafer's 96-square-foot home might be smaller than most American bathrooms. Set in a bucolic apple orchard, Shafer's two-story home fits in well with the beautiful surroundings. A house that is smaller than 100 square feet may be shocking in an era where the average American home size is now in excess of 2,000 square feet (2,349 feet in 2004), but Shafer is eager to share his love of smaller houses. He is the founder and operator of Tumbleweed Tiny House Company, where he designs and markets small homes as backyard, second, or primary residences. One aspect of a small house that appeals to me is less housework. Can't beat that, although I'm not sure about 96 square feet. Shafer's home brought back memories of the simple living aesthetic put forth by Henry David Thoreau. You can read more about Shafer's home in the SFGate.com article or check out the website below.
