Putting on a new roof anytime soon? Consider a reflective roofing material.

Energy Star Roof Savings Calculator | Roofing Materials and Cooling Costs

The average home spends over $1000 a year on heating and cooling costs. In these hot summer months, a great deal of heat transfer takes place between the roof and the attic, greatly contributing to those energy costs.

According to Energy Star, reflective roofing products can lower a roof's surface temperature by up to 100F, which can take a load off the home's AC.

To find out how much you can save by installing reflective roofing, try out Energy Star's Roof Savings Calculator.

I played around with the calculator a little bit. It goes deeper than you might think, asking some pretty specific questions about your current roofing material, heating and cooling system, insulation and so on. For anyone contemplating a new roof it's worth the ten minutes to see what you could save on energy costs with a new reflective roof. Keep in mind that some reflective roofing materials qualify for a tax credit.

Would you install a reflective roof on your house?
