Forward Thinking

I’m all about bright and shiny, so it was with great glee that I stumbled upon Electrolux’s “Imagine the Home in 2020” competition. Once you get past the boring-as-Saltines name, you’ll be wowed by the range of products these imagineers have come up with(over 3,000 entries) not to mention what they predict will be passé in 14 years. Care for a sample? How about a pair of vacuum slippers, an inflatable fridge, or maybe some window cleaning robots for grandma. I won’t say who won this designers duel—you’ll have to give their site some traffic for that—but if you’re a fan of “nature’s negative ion generator,” I think you’ll leave happy (if not clean).

Cooking with Einstein

Quick, name two things you don’t have enough of. No, not that. Not that either. Think kitchens...right—space and time, and if you’re like me, you’d give anything for more of either. Sharp’s new Microwave Drawer actually promises both, letting you reclaim precious countertop while enjoying a three-second pop tart. Unlike most conventional ‘waves, Sharps 1000-watt, 30-inch wide drawer version is installed at hip level, opens with a touch, and features an LCD touch-screen that spews step-by-step instructions and cooking tips. It has a one cubic foot capacity, which roughly equates to a 9x13-inch pan or 108 pop tarts (unfrosted). Price is set around $850. Available now.
