To Build Myself or Not?
Many have asked this question before embarking on what could be your dream home or nightmare. As a contractor myself I have witnessed several variations of experiences from homeowners regarding this journey.
The biggest mistake I have seen homeowners make is using saving money as the the drive and basis for building their home. More times than not homeowners spend more in the end trying to save in the beginning. Another aspect that is overlooked is the amount of time involved in building a home.
Many of us, myself included do not always put the value of our time. Time is money no matter how you look at it. Example: Today I spent much of my day picking up steel and renting a lift so the steel could be placed because the city decided after the plans were approved that we indeed needed more support. Not planned or expected but required. This is one of many circumstances that occurr during a project.
I have been in the business for 24 years and I am still learning today. There is many intricate details involved in building a home, many that can be costly if overlooked. The point of my article is not to discourage but to way all the pros and cons. Good subs is the absolute key element. Orginzation is the most important. I enjoy sharing my insites and help whenever possible. My last advice is get at leats 3 bids.
